An explosion whose cause is still unknown but which one witness attributed to a bomb injured eight people Sunday in a cafe in the Turkish city of Istanbul Anatolia news agency reported.

The blast blew out windows and destroyed one car parked near the cafe in the outlying Büyükçekmece quarter on the European side of the Bosporus it said.

Two people were hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries while six others sustained only light injuries hospital sources told the news agency.

Police at the scene were not immediately able to determine the cause of the blast but one of those injured told Anatolia he believed it to have been caused by a bomb.

Istanbul has been struck by a number of bomb attacks over the past years by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) extreme leftist organisations and Islamist groups.
