Gunmen kill WFP driver in Somalia


Somali forces have been struggling to contain the violence


Somali gunmen have shot and killed a driver working for the United Nation's World Food Programme.
Hassan Abdi was the third driver contracted by the WFP to be killed in Somalia this year.
He was attacked on Thursday morning while driving in a convoy of trucks taking relief food from Mogadishu to the Bay and Bakool regions.
The attack comes just days after a ceasefire agreement was signed by the government and opposition in Djibouti.
On Wednesday a prominent aid worker was shot dead in the capital Mogadishu.
The head of the local Woman and Child Care aid agency Mohamed Mahdi was killed by unidentified gunmen.
Safe passage
A WFP official condemned the attack on aid personnel and trucks.
"We urge all parties to ensure the safe passage of humanitarian staff and cargo across the country especially at a time when we are trying to feed more people and need to double food deliveries" said WFP deputy country director Denise Brown.
The UN condemned the attack on the WFP driver and sent condolences to his family.
It also warned that nearly half of Somalia's population would require aid later this year.
A peace deal was signed by a top Islamist leader Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Prime Minister Nur Adde. Aimed at ending years of conflict the deal provides for Ethiopian troops to leave Somalia within 120 days. Somalia has experienced almost constant civil conflict since the collapse of Mohamed Siad Barre's regime in January 1991.
