South Wales Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a two-year-old boy.
An ambulance was called to an address at Nantymoel in Bridgend county just before midnight on Wednesday.
The boy was initially taken to hospital in Bridgend but he was later transferred to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff where he died.
Police remain at the terraced house on Ogwy Street where two teddy bears were on the window sill outside.
A message on a card on a yellow teddy bear read: "To a special little boy. You will always be in our thoughts. Now a little angel. Love all your little friends at playgroup."
As the small community spoke of their shock on Friday morning a woman collapsed in front of the house before running screaming across the road.
She was led away by a police officer.
Neighbour Matthew Grant said: "We saw the ambulance come on Wednesday night. The mum was carrying the baby in her arms and I could see he was unconscious. It's all quite sad.
"I didn't know the family but I'd seen him running down the road before."
A neighbour said the community was in shock over the death

A 62-year-old neighbour who did not want to be named said she had been in tears over the death.
She said: "It did really upset me. For any two-year-old to die is so upsetting.
"I would see the father pushing him in his pushchair taking him on walks. It's just terrible."
A young neighbour described the death as "a tragedy" and said the whole community was in shock.
Another resident said they had seen the boy playing during recent warm weather. A post-mortem examination was being carried out and the local coroner has been informed. A police spokesperson said: "An investigation is ongoing and inquiries are continuing."
