Polish Holocaust hero dies
Irena Sendler a Polish woman who saved 2500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto during the Nazi occupation in World War II died yesterday in Warsaw aged 98 her daughter confirmed. A social worker Irena Sendler worked with Warsaw's poor Jewish families prior to the war. After Nazi Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939 she took grave risks to help Polish Jews trapped by the Nazis in the Warsaw Ghetto.

Harare rejects Western poll observers

Zimbabwe will not invite election observers from Western countries to monitor a presidential run-off unless they remove sanctions state media said yesterday rejecting opposition demands. Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa said Zimbabwe would not bow to pressure to invite election monitors from Western countries and the United Nations.

Greeks face dry pumps

Greeks are facing severe gasoline shortages due to a continuing strike by the owners of fuel tankers. The few gas stations open in Athens on Sunday ran out of fuel. The fuel tanker owners have decided to prolong their weeklong strike demanding a 13 percent raise in their state-regulated transport fees. They are only being offered a 5 percent raise.

Developing countries eye nuke power

More than 40 developing countries have recently approached United Nations officials to express interest in starting nuclear power programs the Washington Post reported on Monday. The interest among developing countries ranging from the Gulf to Latin America is a concern to proliferation experts who say it could provide the building blocks for nuclear arsenals in some of the countries the Post said.

Uzbekistan continues Andijan 'persecution'

Uzbek authorities are continuing to persecute witnesses of a bloody 2005 aaaaadown by security forces against an uprising in the eastern province of Andijan Human Rights Watch said yesterday. On the night of May 12-13 2005 Uzbek security forces shot down hundreds of peaceful demonstrators who had come out to support an uprising in the ex-Soviet Central Asian state witnesses and campaigners have said.

Separatists kill 10 in India's northeast

Tribal separatist rebels shot dead at least 10 railway workers in two weekend attacks in India's restive northeast police yesterday. Heavily armed rebels from the outlawed Dima Halam Daoga (DHD) group raided a railway construction site in Assam state Sunday. "Seven people were killed on the spot when the militants fired indiscriminately with automatic weapons" said S. Singh a senior police official.
