Boy 5 dies after car hits cow



A five-year-old boy has died after the car he was travelling in hit a cow and spun out of control.
The youngster was being driven by his 41-year-old father on a main road when they hit the animal which was standing in the road.
Emergency services responded to the crashed Volkswagen Golf in the village of Newmains North Lanarkshire at about 0350 BST on Saturday.
The young boy died a short time later at Wishaw General Hospital.
His father who was the only other person in the car was also taken to hospital and is being treated for minor injuries.
Strathclyde Police said in a statement: "It appears the vehicle struck a cow which was on the roadway and the vehicle lost control." The cow was believed to have been found dead after the incident. Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash which happened on the A73 close to Hershill Farm.
