İzmir Mayor Aziz Kocaoğlu said the dams of Tahtalı and Balçova that supply drinking water to the city currently hold amounts that would only suffice for the next 180 days and asked citizens to use water economically.
Kocaoğlu emphasized that residents had welcomed a water campaign launched by İzmir Municipality last summer and no water cuts were necessary. He said rainfall has been below the expected level due to global warming. “This year we are faced with a more difficult situation in terms of water capacity. The residents of İzmir need to be more careful in using water.” Kocaoğlu also said he believed İzmir would overcome the water scarcity thanks to the municipality's new investments and works regarding water resources as well as citizens' sensitivity to the issue.
